He Pours Hot Water Over A Store-Bought Apple. What Comes Off Will Disgust You!

If you walk into an orchard, pick an apple from a tree and rub it on your shirt, you will notice that it shines. That’s because you’ve just polished off the natural waxes and yeasts that the apple produces in order to protect its high water content. And without that wax, fruits and vegetables would end up going all dry and nasty. Many store-bought apples are protected by an additional coating of food-grade wax so they can stay in storage for long periods of time. The problem is that some food-grade wax is made from petroleum products, and we all know that petroleum isn’t good for us. For this reason, it is much safer to buy all apples from a farmer’s market or a local farm stand. The only wax present on those apples is the natural wax from the fruit.

If you have no choice but to buy apples (or any fruits and veggies) from the store, cleaning them prior to eating should solve the problem. Finding Joy in My Kitchen recommends filling the sink with approximately 4 inches of lukewarm water and adding 1 tbsp of lemon juice and another tbsp of baking soda. Put the apples in the water mixture and scrub them with a fruit and veggie scrub brush. Rinse and pat them dry, and you’re all set!
