In popular culture, the dentist’s office is portrayed as one of the least pleasant places to be. Two procedures, pulling teeth and filling teeth, are largely responsible for this reputation. According to, if researchers have their way the latter procedure may soon be resigned to the history books.

Tideglusib, an Alzheimer’s drug, has been found to stimulate the stem cells in the pulp of teeth and this results in natural tooth repair. The foundation of tooth regeneration is the production of useful quantities of new dentine. Dentine is the mineralized material beneath tooth enamel that is destroyed by tooth decay.

Teeth can generate some new dentine, but the resulting layer is too thin to repair cavities because the enzyme GSK-3 blocks the body from producing more naturally. Tideglusib is one of a class of drugs known as GSK-3 inhibitors, and trials are being conducted to test the ability of this class of drug to fight Alzheimer’s disease, bipolar disorder and some forms of cancer.

GSK-3 is heavily involved in a number of biological signaling pathways and ideally it should not have to be meddled with in order to promote healthier teeth. In the unlikely event that this treatment not only works but has no severe side effects, the ability to regenerate dentine would hardly be an invitation to ignore dental hygiene.  Oral diseases have been linked to systematic diseases, including Alzheimer’s, stroke, heart disease and diabetes.

It is unfortunate that so much effort is dedicated to fighting off symptoms and that the underlying cause of disease is consistently ignored. If you want to protect your teeth, one of the first things you need to do is protect your oral biome. The bacteria that cause tooth decay and gum disease can enter into your circulatory system and cause your liver to release C-reactive proteins, which have inflammatory effects on your entire circulatory system. Regenerating dentine would not attend to this major oral health issue.

Achieving oral health is really about promoting balance among the bacteria in your mouth. Interestingly, probiotics do not work in the oral cavity, so it’s not as simple as adding beneficial bacteria to your mouth. The first step is to stop killing microbes in your mouth with mouthwashes and rinses. You should also avoid fluoridated toothpaste and water. At least 34 human studies and 100 animal studies have also linked fluoride to brain damage, including lower IQ in children, and studies have shown that fluoride toxicity can lead to a wide variety of health problem.

Aside from fluoride and antibacterial agents, the mercury found in silver fillings is another dental-related substance that can wreak havoc with your health. It has long since been established as a dangerous neurotoxin and major source of environmental pollution.

Then there is the issue of the root canal, a notorious procedure that was dreaded by patients long before its many health risks were revealed. If you want a rundown on why you should avoid this painful and dangerous procedure, I highly recommend my article “Toxic Teeth: How a Root Canal Could Be Making You Sick.”
