Compassion for animals is one of the highest expressions of humanity, and many are happy to see this ban.
According to Taiwan’s Central News Agency, the island nation has just declared it illegal to slaughter dogs and cats for the production of meat for human consumption, while also increasing fines for charges of cruelty to animals.
The Animal Protection Act of Taiwan was amended this Tuesday to ban the sale, purchase, and eating of cat and dog meat, and offenders will face an extreme maximum penalty of $8,300, notes the Associated Press.
Additionally, the bill strengthened penalties for people who abuse animals, increasing punishment to a two-year sentence from a one-year sentence, with a whopping increase in fines from $33,000 to $66,000. Repeat offenders who violate this new law will face a maximum 5-year sentence in prison or a $167,000.
The amendment to this law is the result of reaction to several high-profile animal abuse cases in Taiwan.
In another case, after it was discovered that a restaurant was serving dog meat last year in order to trim costs, the Taiwanese city of Kaohsiung became the first city to officially ban this practice, which many people around the world find incredibly inhumane and cruel.
Compassion for animals is one of the highest expressions of humanity, and can actually make our lives better and happier.
